We had PE ( physical education) today and we hated it. We decided to ditch it and announce that national day would be on the 1st of December. Thankfully we had a free period in math. God, we hated math! The fact that we had to sit down and listen to our teacher go on and on and on about numbers and variables just bored us. Hamda loved math, she was the only one of us who used to enjoy it and never wanted to ditch. The three of us kept talking about what we were going to wear on national day. Shamsa was planning on making 300 cupcakes with the UAE flag on them. Her cupcakes were very well known around school. The fluffy yet moist colorful cupcakes she made with a creamy oreo topping were a burst of pleasure. People would literally fight for them, and would actually order boxes and pay her as much as she wished.
During recess our principle told us to go to goum Khalaf and ask them what they could get for national day. We were panicking, the questions going through our minds were endless. Should we go talk to them or not? Should we go to the bathroom and check how we look first? We decided to just go for it and calm down. As we walked towards their bench, they all stopped talking and faced us. "Look who's here!" Khalaf said with a smirk. "We need to know what you can get for the national day?" Shamsa stated with a hint of attitude. They all giggled. "Who said we're even going?" chuckled Khalaf. Then the principle interrupted and told them that since they are locals, they have to be present. They must also get decoration, and different local food. "So what will you be getting, Hamdan?" I managed to say with a low voice. "I'll get anything you wish for, Layla." Hamdan replied with a wide smile. Khalaf interrupted by saying he will be getting Machboos. Machboos is a well known Emirati dish that included rice, chicken/meat, and some vegetables. Hamda asked Nayef what he will be getting, and he replied by saying "Threed". Threed is a very old dish that was mainly made up of bread, meat/chicken, and the chicken/ meat's sauce. Finally Hamdan decided to get Lgemaat. Lgemaat are the local's favourite desert, they are handful balls of dough that are fried then topped up with Dibs (date sauce). We thanked them, smiled, then walked away with confidence. They seemed flattered, and so were we!
